Today's my first day back to work after a week with my youngest daughter visiting Ohio. So as soon as I get caught back up, I'll have lots to write about that trip.
But today, I wanted to put a question out to other moms. It's a topic we just covered a couple of weeks ago in a Monday Moms poll: How old is old enough for your kids to attend a show without an adult present?
My middle daughter is asking if a ticket to the Vans Warped Tour in August could be her birthday present. She turns 13. I asked her who she thought she would be going with; her response was "perhaps a couple of friends."
Pretty much it seems that we three parental units (mom, dad and step-mom) are in agreement that this won't happen without a parent present. And by "a parent," in my mind that means one of "us" parents.
What do you think? Does an all-day music festival merit different consideration than an evening rock (or whatever those kids are listening to these days) concert? After all, this thing is billed as a "punk rock summer camp" and a "travelling circus of rock."
I'd say it depends on the kid. Having been to six or seven of these things, I'd say Warped Tour, as a whole, is skews a little older than 13. But I remember being 13 and getting dropped off and picked up at amusement parks by my parents. I don't see the Warped Tour as anything different -- though I wasn't much of a troublemaker, so that probably impacted my freedom allowances. Warped is a pretty fun and safe atmosphere -- generally the worst thing is the heat usually. But since there is some punk rock, I could see how parents would be concerned about language and/or getting caught in a mosh pit.Lisa..this is Brenda I work with Jill. A few years ago my daughter and your oldest step daughter went to the Hillary Duff concert together. I think it was jill's bday present for her. Jill got permission from her mom to let her go. We met there the girls went in and we went accross the street to bulldog grill and had dinner and waited. They had a good time from what i remember. I think if there is perhaps a group they would be fine. Your kids seem to have a good heads on there shoulders.Omg, the great and honorable Oz is in the house...! Good to see you over on the mom side of the Internets. For you moms out there, who don't know, Mike is one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to the Fresno music scene. And he's also a great D.J. Check out his blog over at fresnobeehive.com. :) As for Lisa's question, I went to (and I had totally forgotten about this until I read the word "mosh pit") a School of Fish concert at Fresno State when I was 14. I don't remember if my parents knew I was there, or not, but there was definitely a mosh pit with a bunch of crazy men running around with their shirts off. I remember being intrigued and wanting to dive in, but didn't. Point being, is that it all depends on the child, and what type of personality they have, and how well they can stand on their own two feet under the excitement of a rock/punk rock environment.Lindsay went last year at 14 and I thin k the concert was fine. The problem is that it was 105 and she doesnt do well in the heat so she passed out. She really wanted to see All Time Low and passed out right in front of them before they played. This got her and a couple friends a visit to their bus and a mini private concert and she got to visit with them. I didn't know this until I picked her up. I was less than thrilled but she had a good time. She wants to go again this year but I think not. An outside concert in the heat in a blacktop parking lot is not a good idea for her. I don't even let her go to the movies alone unless I am in the theatre.Wow I'm feeling old. Personally, my knee-jerk reaction doesn't take the kid's personality into account at all. My brain just screams NO WAY! When I think about it... yeah, the answer is still no way. That just feels really young. But if she was with a parent, and stayed with the parent, yeah-- it feels better. My goal at my first concert was to try to get as close to the stage as possible. I was 15. Bad idea. At 13, I so would have been accidentally caught up in a swell... And day concerts-- let's be honest: tons of pot smoke at the outdoor events and... gawd I sound so old. Would i let my 13 year old son go? Maybe. Again, with a parent that he STAYED WITH. Then, next time... I'd get a little more liberal and maybe remove the leash.
