...well, according to new research there is a gene variation in some that cause them to not stay on the road properly...about 30% of individuals apparently are born with it. Okay, so the study only had 29 participants, but 7 were consistently poor drivers when subjected to an obstacle course via a simulator.
The researchers explain that those with the errant gene have a limited availability of a protein called brain-deprived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This protein assists the brain's memory by communicating between cells...when a person is engaged in a certain activity, BDNF is secreted and helps the brain respond. There is a tendency for folks with this gene to make errors from the beginning of an activity and forget more of what they have learned if they are removed from it for awhile. Curiously enough, if the person with the gene also has a disease like Parkinson's, they stay alert and mentally sharp longer than those without it, and cognitive disorders may be lessened if one has this gene.
Oh boy...I suppose crazier things have happened but if you take this research to the extreme, then I don't have to take accountability for anything and can blame it on genetics...uh oh, my auto insurance would also go through the roof! Oh well, it's an interesting study of humans to ponder.
