Some Like it Hot… It’s Not Too Late To Garden.

It’s getting hot and you’re worried you missed to boat on spiffing up your garden landscape?  No worries… There’s still plenty to choose from and some like it hot.  In fact, some of the prettiest choices are just now arriving at the local nurseries.  Some of those summer lovelies were waiting on a little heat before they’d give that last little push and put on a few buds.

So keep in mind a few things.  You will need to plant in good soil…. So heed those recommendations to add compost to the existing soil.  Don’t plant too deep.  (Common mistake and plant killer, that one is.) You will also need to make sure your sprinklers are in working order and that the water is getting to the rootball of the new plants.

You can certainly plant in hot weather if you make the proper selections, plant properly and keep an eye on your plants.  I don’t recommend spending big bucks on fussy plants and then heading off on a month long vacation.   That’s just asking for disappointment.

Lastly,  but perhaps most importantly, do some entertaining!  Always remember to share your garden spaces with the company of good friends and laughter.  I think the plants like it too!

Happy Planting!

BLOOMS OF SUMMER

  1. Is it too late to plant tomatoes?

  2. Gen… You are cutting it close on tomatoes but may still have some time for a crop if you have a sunny spot and buy a good sized plant. Many folks starting planting tomatoes as soon as we were out of freezing temps. I guess it depends how long our summer temps hold on and how well tended the garden. You won’t likely have time to grow from seed unless you plan to finish in a greenhouse.

Use a good organic fertilizer and plant in good well drained soil. Amend your soil with compost if necessary. Refer back to my blog on tomatoes if you need some more tips on tomatoes. There could be some useful info there.

  3. OK, going to jump on it. I have a giant pot (prob meant for a tree or something) was going to try planting in. Will run out today and find a gigantic tomato plant and stick it with some of that dirt/fertilizer stuff. :)
